As most of research repeatedly says, students who interact with books are the better readers they will become. So… we introduced EPIC To Year 2 students.
EPIC is an online and app-based data based of thousands of real books. Forget decodable readers and leveled books. This website offers amazing, authentic texts for students. These texts are perfect for read-to-self, class read-alouds, or partner reading. Additionally, EPIC offers hundreds of these books in read-aloud form and they are adding more every week. Year 2 students were very excited in exploring EPIC They worked in a pair to digest the function of search in EPIC. Students tried to search books based on their interests. By using school iPads, students can find many good reading to share with their friends. We wanted ACG School Jakarta students to be better readers and EPIC is a good resource that delivers books that are high-interest for each of the unique readers. Year 3 students explored about advertising during the theme of How We Organize Ourselves.
Students read books about advertisement from different media, such as TV, food packaging, magazines, internet, etc. Students also became more aware about the language and techniques used in print adverting as well as the impact of advertising on their daily lives. In deeper students’ understanding, they did a project in making a propaganda advertisement to promote a specific area of the library or their favorite book. Students worked in groups to creating an advertisement draft, later they transformed the information written on their draft paper to a poster. At the end of the UOI lesson, students did a presentation in front of the class to show their own making advertisement and explained about the advertisement language used on their poster. As a preparation to Student Led Conference (SLC) on 22 March 2018, Year 2 students practiced in using “My Favorite” tab on Epic. Students browsed the collection of books about reuse, reduce, and recycle. They prepared to read some books to their parents during the SLC in the library. Students were very fascinated and enjoyed reading books on Epic.
In supporting Year 2 UOI, Sharing the Planet about humans and their choices that have an impact on the planet, Library emphasized students to research and describe the facts of information about reduce, reuse, and recycle. Students showed their responsibility to reduce, reuse, ad recycle materials. Year 2 students worked in group in creating a poster about which actions that can support reduce, reuse, and recycle. Students did cut and glue pictures provided on a big poster. They also did a presentation in front of class to elaborate and explain about the actions. Student did explain about the differences between the 3R’s and described the cause and effect about each action.
Year 5 students learned to think critically about news messages written in newspapers. They learned to understand that a newspaper is organized and written in a special role. To gain deeper understanding about information on newspaper, students did look and researched from the Jakarta Post newspaper. They learned to find information about current events related to government theme. Students became an investigative reporter. Students also wrote information by practicing the scanning, skimming and notetaking skills. Students really enjoyed this activity because they can browse more information from new sources; the newspaper.
Kindy students had fun when reading Click Clack Moo Cows That Type written by Doreen Cronin. The story is about Farmer Brown who is having really big problem when his cows start leaving him notes. The story was so funny and Kindy students enjoyed it very much. After reading the story, students did fun coloring activity about cows. They expressed their creativity after enjoying stories from books.
Now it's time to create! To go with our lesson about vegetables in the library, Year 1 classes showed their fondness in creating their plant scrapbook. After reading Growing Vegetable Soup story by Lois Ehlert, Year 1 students were very excited in making their scrapbook about plants. We were discussing about planting activities and this cute book is for sharing about students’ understanding about growing vegetables. Students love talking about their drawing and sharing it to the class. At first, they had to cut out the paper and put some glue to make an “accordion” look scrapbook. We thought this may be a little difficult for some of my kids to cut the paper but in the end, they just did it very well. It was a great activity to have fun while students share their understanding about the lesson and at the same time it really made each student feel good about their creativity. Mr McGee written by Pamela Allen is a beautiful and funny story about a man who lives under his apple tree. One sunny day, he thought he would stand on a chair stacked on a chair, standing on a table. While he was up there, a rumbling made the chair and table fall to the ground leaving Mr McGee stuck up the tree. The rumbling was caused by three elephants, who use their height and trunks to free him from the branches. To thank them, Mr McGee invites them to tea, although one greedy elephant has other ideas. What happened next involves Mr McGee being flown through the air, landing in mud, and frightening the greedy elephant away! The story of Mr McGee is told in wonderful rhyme that loved by Kindy students. When we were reading the story, Kindy students showed their interesting and enjoyment of the story by asking questions, sharing their opinions, and just relaxed and laughed hard of the funny story. We also had a short play about Mr McGee visited the zoo and the kids loved to watch their friends in the play. It was very entertaining story and the play ran so fun. Kindy students did have fun. Reflective activities happened in library by provided year 2 students with an opportunity to absorb information more deeply – enhancing their creative and understanding about the lesson. During their integrated unit, How We Organize Ourselves, Year 2 students shown their creativity in making book and illustrated it. Working in group of 3, students had opportunity in sharing their ideas and working collaboratively with their teammates to produce a picture book. They shared their ideas about the plot of the story, the characters, and the illustrations. Later on, students had opportunity to run an ACG Book Store in the library. They had discussion time to decide how much they want to sell their book and they tried to convince people to buy their handmade books. Students used dummy money to do the transaction. The ACG Book Store ran smoothly and students were having fun in learning. |
