YEAR 6 STUDENTS CONTINUED LEARNING TO USE ONLINE AND PRINTED ENCYLOPEDIA FOR RESEARCH STUDY8/9/2017 In the library, the lesson is integrated with classroom UOI “Where We Are in Place and Time” unit. We continue learning the scanning and skimming skills in finding information about the continents of the world (in order from the biggest to the smallest). We understood that encyclopaedias are arranged in volumes and single volume and each volume has guided words, and headings to find information on a topic.
We also searched for information about people famous places and its products that support the people in selling the products of the continent then paraphrased findings using our own sentences. Within this term we will learn to use Britannica online to get deeper understanding about the research study of our project.

Year 1 students started the lesson by watching videos about how paper is made from wood and how to make liquid notebook cover. Students extracted information to answer specific questions and built an understanding of the materials in making books. In the process, they retrieved information from multiple sources, learnt the basic information about solid and liquid matters, and presented newly gained knowledge in oral form.
After that, we had an experiment in making liquid book cover. Students experienced the process in mixing water, baby oil, and some glitter in a plastic. We finished the lesson by looking closely at final product and they asked some questions and expressed their opinion about it. We had an activity about making mini books from solid matter—papers. Students created the front and back cover, and they had fun when decoration their book using their hand-drawing illustrations. Recognizing library signs and symbols: Year 3 students develop awareness about the library rules6/9/2017 During the integration UOI (How We Express Ourselves), year 3 students were emphasized to be aware of the signs and symbols found in the library.
The purpose of this lesson was to analyse different signs and symbols they seen in school library, as well as to gain an understanding of what it means. As we all know, signs and symbols are very common in real life, and it is important to understand the meaning behind them. Students started the lesson by exploring the library to locate signs and symbols, drawing what they look like and giving a description of what they mean. During class discussion, they asked and described the signs in full detail (what it looks like, the colours, and any words/pictures on it), and predict what it may mean and where it should be put in the library. At the end of the lesson, students tried to make a sign to be kept in the library. Then they presented it in front of class to express their understanding about their own-made sign. |
